Position: Electrical Design Manager

ENERTRAG South Africa is a clean energy developer and is a subsidiary of ENERTRAG SE, an independent energy company in Germany, France, Ghana, Vietnam, and Uruguay expanding to other areas of the globe. As an independent energy company, ENERTRAG generates electricity, hydrogen, and heat exclusively from renewable sources and supplies safe, inexpensive renewable energy to end-customers from residential, and commercial to heavy industry.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Team Leadership
    • Responsible for a team of electrical designers and engineers (based in South Africa and supporting the broader region)
    • Integrating with the grid planning and design functions in ENERTRAG globally
    • Development and expansion of technical infrastructure and process to optimise electrical designs and support the design base
  2. Optimisation of grid connection preliminary and detailed design for ESA projects (Wind, PV, Storage and PtX). Note scope can expand to include projects in the region including likes of Hyphen
  3. Electrical design base
    • Custodian of the ENERTRAG electrical design database of the South African / Regional projects.
  4. Project Reporting
    • Regular reporting on the status and the progress of project electrical design and grid connection. Pro-actively inform as regards to any major deviation from the plan
  5. Grid planning integration
    • Provide electrical design inputs into the grid planning studies and conceptual design for the purposes of initial grid connection application (Eskom CEL)
  6. Public relation
    • Interact and engage with public bodies, communities and govenment institutions for necessary permits and approvals as regards electrical design
  7. Decision Making
    • Making decisions on project electrical design matters within the authority given by management
  8. Knowledge collection and sharing
    • Compile specific information regarding requirements for the electrical design base and the related workshoping thereof and development of staff
  9. Advocacy and networking
    • Represent ENERTRAG in industry forums and working groups. Engage Eskom and municipalities as regards grid interfacing and design, including new/novel approaches that support grid access

Qualifications & Personal Competencies:

  • Engineer (Electrical or similar)
  • University degree
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience
  • Professional Registration (Engineering Council of South Africa) is advantageous
  • Ability to convincingly manage teams and individual team members in a local, regional and international environment
  • Be an active and contributing member in inter-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to sense other people’s emotions, coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling
  • Delivering results even under adverse conditions and remaining calm even under stress
  • Ability to clearly articulate your opinion while respecting others’ point of view and trying to convince through arguments.

Skills & Experience:

  1. Power system analysis
    • Analysis of power system designs and electrical plant in simple and hybrid power generation facilities. Expertise in load-flow, fault-level and dynamic stability studies with exposure to reactive compensation and harmonic analysis
  2. Electrical design
    • Design of electrical systems such as substations and power lines, and the related design integration with generation plant and energy storage systems.
  3. Grid connection application
    • Interfacing with grid owners and operators as regards grid connection applications in order to develop preliminary grid designs and obtain firm quotations for grid connection (in an Eskom context managing the process from CEL acceptance to BQ issue/acceptance and commercial operation)
  4. Grid codes and standards
    • Detailed knowledge and implementation of the local standards and codes impacting on the grid interconnection of power generation/storage/PtX projects and the design of the related electrical plant
  5. Power system control
    • Basic exposure to power system control and the integration of multiple technologies in hybrid facilities.
